Stem News

Stem Around the Web

It’s been a couple months since our first edition of “Stem Around the Web” – the company version of our routine client news roundup. Here’s a quick look at what we’ve been up to since then, beyond our own network of blogs:

We’ll be back in another couple months!

Lawrence Koplow’s DUI Evidence Case Makes National Headlines

Stem Legal client Lawrence Koplow has had a busy week – a case he’s involved in has made national headlines.

Reporting in the Phoenix-based Arizona Republic newspaper described how 11 DUI cases have been consolidated into one action, questioning “whether a crime-lab technician’s decision to bootstrap old software onto a new blood-testing machine in 2009 — and the faulty results that allegedly arose from that decision — has affected evidence handled by Scottsdale’s crime lab.” (See: Scottsdale DUIs in question over lab methods)

Koplow, a criminal defense lawyer with a large DUI practice, was quoted several times in the article.

“Forget about suppressing, they’re not even letting juries know this is going on. … They’re letting juries hear from the crime lab, ‘We’re confident that this machine is accurate within 5 percent,’ when the reality is there’s all this evidence to the contrary.”

The Republic article was picked up by the Associated Press and subsequently reported across the US.

Steve Matthews on Building a Law Firm Publishing Culture

Stem president and founder Steve Matthews will be presenting a free webinar through Lunch Hour Legal Marketing on Thursday, April 18th 2013. Steve’s talk is on Creating (and Managing) a Law Firm Publishing Culture.

Lawyer publishing has long been a staple of law firm marketing, turning lawyers who “wrote the book” on their area of practice into widely recognized authorities who showcased their professional credibility to the market. What has changed, thanks to the Internet, is the volume!  Most firms have significantly more authors, publishing vehicles, and content distribution options than ever before, especially digitally. But what if your firm isn’t moving in this direction? Or, almost worse, what if it is moving, but so quickly that there is no formalized strategy behind your firm’s publishing?

Steve will discuss:

  • How (and where) to inspire new authorship within your firm;
  • Finding the right “fit” between different authors and publishing vehicles (or, why everyone is not necessarily a blogger!);
  • Building better routines — monitoring and brainstorming new topics, editorial calendars, scheduling;
  • The role of practice group publishing in midsize and larger firms;
  • Creating measurable objectives that support your firm’s business goals;
  • The role of search engine traffic in creating continued exposure for your firm’s body of work;
  • Identifying publishing targets, audience demographics, and measuring exposure; and
  • Time management — tips for making the demands of writing and publishing easier.

To register for this free webinar, visit www.lunchhourlegalmarketing.com.  Lunch Hour Legal Marketing is a joint effort from the Massachusetts Law Office Management Assistance Program, the North Carolina Bar Association’s Center for Practice Management, and the Chicago Bar Association’s Law Practice Management & Technology.

After a client passes away, the firm assists the family or executor with probate and estate settlement.

Mark Heffner is a true pioneer in the area of elder law; he’s practiced in this field since 1988, when an elder care crisis in his own family prompted him to develop the skills necessary to protect elderly clients and their loved ones. He is one of only 400 attorneys in the US designated as a Certified Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation (NELF), and has been a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys for more than 20 years. He also teaches elder law at the Roger Williams University School of Law and authors the Rhode Island Elder Care Lawyer Blog.

About Heffner & Associates: Since 1992, Heffner & Associates has been focused on solving problems and achieving results for older Rhode Islanders and their families. BioMet Hip Replacement Help from Hissey Kientz

Stem client Hissey Kientz recently launched a microsite to help people suffering from injuries related to BioMet M2A Magnum hip replacements.

biomet-hip-replacement

The microsite, available at www.biomethiplawyers.com, explains that despite widespread reports of problems related to the hip implants, the FDA has not yet issued a recall. However, the FDA has issued recalls for DePuy ASR, Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II hip implant systems, which are similar in structure to BioMet’s metal-on-metal design.

Consumers have reported side effects of the BioMet hip replacements such as severe pain, swelling and difficulty walking, and many have required hip revision surgery.  Problems stemming from the implant may include fretting and corrosion, loosening of the hip implant, metallosis (metal poisoning), osteolysis, bone deterioration, fractures, and dislocation.

The site also provides current news, and encourages anyone who has experienced side effects or required corrective surgery to resolve problems related to the BioMet M2A Magnum hip replacement to contact the firm.

Hissey Kientz Launches Stryker Hip Replacement Recall Microsite

Stem client Hissey Kientz LLP has just launched a microsite created for patients affected by the July 2012 recall of Stryker Rejuvenate and Stryker ABG II modular hip replacement systems, at http://www.strykerhiprecallhelp.com/.

stryker-hip-recall

The hip replacement systems, manufactured by Stryker Corporation, have metal components that can grind together over time and shred, releasing toxins into the body and resulting in a form of metal poisoning called metallosis. The hip replacement can also suddenly dislocate, cause osteolysis, fretting, loosening and other major problems.

The microsite features a news section, details on the recalls in the US and Canada, and a case evaluation submission form.

For more information on the Stryker hip replacement recall, visit the microsite or contact Hissey Kientz’s person injury lawyers directly.

Stem Around the Web

Stem Legal has long been publishing regular roundups of client news over at our Law Firm Web Strategy Blog, and it’s time we do the same for company news.  Here’s a look at what our team has been up to around the web over the last few months.

To round things out, we’d also like to mention some of our most recent and frequently shared posts from Law Firm Web Strategy:

Russell Alexander Launches New Firm Website

Stem Legal is proud to announce the launch of a newly redesigned website for our clients, Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers!

russell-alexander-screenshot

With offices in Markham, Lindsay, and Brooklin, Ontario, Russell Alexander provides a wide range of family law services. The firm’s lawyers are strongly committed to the processes of Collaborative Practice and resolving conflict without the courts, but are equally prepared to to bring matters to trial when necessary. The firm’s lawyers and staff pride themselves on treating their clients, who generally hail from the Durham, Oshawa and Kawartha Lakes regions, as if they were family — see the many glowing testimonials to that effect!

One significant improvement for the new website has been the addition of detailed practice pages. The firm has added more explanation to how they advise clients facing divorce, child custody and access cases, spousal and child support matters, or division of family property. They also identify frequently drafted documents such as separation and cohabitation agreements; explain how they represent clients in Family Responsibility Office (FRO) and default hearings, and how they utilize mediation and ADR within the context of marital disputes.

Firm founder Russell Alexander is an active social media participant and blogger, and the new website reflects this. A special landing page was created to summarize the newest posts from Russell’s very popular FamilyLLB blog.  Dedicated pages were also included to showcase the firm’s YouTube channel, which displays selected videos that feature lawyers and staff discussing Ontario family law topics.

Another noteworthy focus of the site is on the firm’s commitment to community. The Russell I. Alexander Giving Fund has distributed more than $15,000 in charitable donations to worthy community organizations since the fund’s inception in 2009.

Lastly, the website features an extensive collection of educational consumer resources, including Ontario family law FAQs, in-depth information on collaborative practice, articles on parental alienation syndrome, recommended books and websites, and a guide to navigating the family courts system in Ontario.

The site was designed responsively, presenting equally as well on a tablet or smartphone as it does on a desktop computer.

Our sincerest congratulations to Russell, associate lawyers Wendy Lloyd and Aleksandra Czyzowska, and the all firm’s staff, who put forth a true team effort to create brand-new content (and revive some of the old), resulting in a terrific website that captures both the firm’s professionalism and personality.

New Transvaginal Mesh Microsite from Hissey Kientz LLP

Stem client Hissey Kientz LLP has launched a microsite detailing the problems faced by former patients who received a transvaginal mesh (“TVM”) patch during surgery to repair pelvic organ prolapse. The new site is located at TVMLawsuitHelp.com.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings regarding the use of transvaginal mesh, which can expose patients to a greater risk of complications than other methods of surgical vaginal repair. The FDA stated that patients undergoing mesh repair surgery could experience severe side effects such as vaginal mesh erosion and organ perforation.

This new site details information regarding the brands of varying surgical mesh devices, research findings, explanations of the potential complications, and information regarding TVM lawsuits.

For more information about the new Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuits Help website, please visit the link above or contact Hissey Kientz’s lawyers directly.

GranuFlo Recall Help Microsite From Hissey Kientz

Stem client Hissey Kientz has just launched a microsite for consumers affected by the recent recall of dialysis product GranuFlo, at www.GranuFloRecallHelp.com.

The recall occurred after an internal memo from manufacturer Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) was leaked. The memo described a connection between the elevated bicarbonate levels caused by acid concentrates GranuFlo and NaturaLyte and cardiac arrest. FMS sent this memo to its own dialysis centers, but didn’t warn thousands of physicians at dialysis clinics not owned by FMC. The FDA issued a Class 1 recall on March 29, 2012.

GranuFlo Recall Help explains how this product was used in hemodialysis; possible side effects including heart attack, stroke, and metabolic alkalosis; news related to the recall; and how those hurt by the product may be eligible to file a lawsuit against GranuFlo’s manufacturer.

For more information about the GranuFlo and NaturaLyte recall, please visit the microsite or contact Hissey Kientz’s lawyers directly.

The firm also helps clients whose children have been born with birth defects linked to Paxil, Zoloft, and Depakote.

Slaw’s Latest Law Firm Guest Blogger: Harrison Pensa LLP (@harrisonpensa)

In case you missed it, Stem client Harrison Pensa LLP of London, Ontario, has just completed a very successful week of posts over at Slaw. Harrison Pensa took an interesting approach to its “Slaw Week” — three of its articles were about trends in certain areas of practice (including family law, class actions and social media law), while the other two concentrated on the business of law (including hiring a CEO and automating process-heavy work). Collectively, HP’s Slaw posts garnered dozens of retweets across Canada, the US and the UK.

Here’s a roundup of all five Harrison Pensa Slaw posts:

Look for all five of these posts to appear over the next several days at Harrison Pensa’s own network of blogs.

Three New Integrations For the Clio Platform

Over the past two months, Stem client Clio has unveiled three major integrations into their web-based practice management platform:

  • On May 31, the company announced an integration with My Legal Briefcase’s small claims document and scheduling system, court forms and documents, allowing the two platforms to connect and sync.
  • On June 11, Clio revealed that RightSignature users can now send invoices and other Clio documents for digital signature with the click of a button.
  • On July 12, a new one-click “Scan to Clio” option was announced for the Fujitsu ScanSnap, allowing Mac and PC users to scan documents directly into Clio.

Congratulations, Clio, on helping small and medium-sized law firms take their paperless practices to the next level!

Jonathan Rosenfeld Launches Dog Bite Injuries Microsite

Stem client Jonathan Rosenfeld, a Chicago-based personal injury lawyer, has unveiled a new microsite, one devoted to his dog bite injury practice, at www.chicagodogbiteinjurylawyers.com.

Rosenfeld cites the dog-unfriendly environment of congested urban neighbourhoods, the increasing popularity of aggressive breeds such as pitbulls and rottweilers, and a lack of training and supervision from owners as reasons why insurance claims related to dog bite and attack injuries have increased more than 50% over the last decade.

The website explains state and municipal laws related to dog ownership, and what legal claims may be made by victims of bites or attacks. Related resources, articles, and news are also available.
