So, this morning I checked out Google+ Local – the Goog’s newest offering, which replaces Google Places and makes recommendations about local businesses based on your past reviews, reviews your contacts have made, as well as Zagat ratings. Handy, right?
Well, check out my Google+ Local homepage:
Wow, what glowing reviews! I poked around and found lots of other local restaurants with consistently good reviews – so why are these places showing up as the #1 choice in a given category?
Another thing – I can retrieve a list of all businesses in a given category, but as far as I can tell, there’s no way to sort those results by rating. So, say I want to know what the highest rated local Mexican restaurant is (seems like a pretty standard thing to search for, no?). Well, I can’t figure out how I would do that, because there’s no obvious way to sort search results. If someone knows how to sort results (not reviews within a result), please leave a comment!
Also: all of the links to external review sites (blogs, Urbanspoon, Trip Advisor, etc.) return a 400 error.
If Google+ Local wants to edge out other local review sites, looks like they’ve still got some work to do.
